Striped Shorts

Ah yes, striped shorts on Spring Street in Soho in the Summertime.
Just doing my alliterative part in my favorite part of town.

TOP: EXPRESS + SHORTS: ASOS + HEELS: KELSI DAGGER + EARRINGS: NORDSTROM (SIMILAR) +
WATCH: MICHAEL KORS + BANGLES: ALEX & ANI

NAIL POLISH: URBAN OUTFITTERS "BLUE VELVET" (FINGERS) +

This is another one of those great day-to-night summer outfits. Shorts and a tank are pretty self-explanatory daytime-wear, but you can up the style factor of your outfit by picking a blouse in a silkier fabric than cotton and pair with structured, high-waisted shorts. Then you can slip on your heels and be ready for a night out!
. . .
Express is one of those stores I hadn't been to in a while, but it's actually done great things for me this summer. When I realized that I basically only own long sleeved tops, I hit up a major sale at Express and was able to get a whole bunch of sleeveless blouses that were nice enough for work and play and were super affordable!

Black and white and re(a)d all over

Like a newspaper!.. Get it?

Ok, my timeless grandpa-esque humor aside, I love the simplicity of this look. Living in NYC, most of my wardrobe has magically seemed to turn black and white, and the simple addition of one accent color (I picked red today, if you couldn't tell) in the form of lipstick, nail polish and a scarf, added the vavavoom I wanted to meet up with friends for drinks downtown after bopping around doing my usual weekend activities.

Sidenote: Cowgirl Seahorse at South Street Seaport has THE BEST frozen margaritas in the city. If you are in Manhattan go there now. This is important. I wanted to write this all in caps but feared it would come on too strong. That's how important.

TOP: AMERICAN EAGLE (OLD - SIMILAR) + SHORTS: TOPSHOP (ALSO LOVE THESE) +
PYRAMID CUFF: C. WONDER + SPIKE BRACELET: BENEVOLENT JEWELS + CLUTCH: MICHAEL KORS +
RING: MATT BERNSON + SILK SCARF: LONGCHAMP (THRIFTED) + NAIL POLISH: MK 'SENSATION'

There are SO many ways to tie a headscarf, but this simple twist look is my personal fave, probably because it reminds me of my favorite Anthropologie headband! (Click HERE to see that baby in action)

HOW TO TIE A SILK SCARF HEADBAND:

1. Fold square scarf in half into a triangle. Fold in the point of the triangle 3 inches or so, then keep folding another 3 inches over itself, and on and on until the scarf is a long thin(ish) strip.

2. Reach underneath your hair and place the center of the strip on the nape of your neck, with the messy side of the strip (where you can see the folds) laying against your head. Then bring the two ends upward, framing your face.

3. Twist the two ends and pull them back down toward your neck, twisting only once so the ends each go back to the side they came from.

4. Tie a knot at the nape of your neck. Voila!

Jumpsuit

JUMPSUIT: TARGET + WEDGES: MICHAEL KORS + EARRINGS: BANANA REPUBLIC (SIMILAR) +
CLUTCH: VINTAGE THRIFT (SIMILAR) + NAIL POLISH: ESSIE "TART DECO"

Oh Target, you fickle mistress. You're a madhouse to even attempt to walk through on the weekends, but every once in a while I happen upon a piece of fashion gold hidden between the tank tops and weirdly colored shorts. While I am normally opposed to spending more than ten bucks on anything at Target, the cost of this rad jumpsuit was hardly a fraction of the price I'd pay for a similar style at any of my usual shopping-go-to's. I've gotten tons of compliments on this sassy summer look, and I even sprung for a matching nail polish to celebrate my savvy shopping.

In accessories fashion holidays nail art nail polish nails neon NYC nyc pride parade OOTD south by soho SOUTHbySOHO summer what I wore white

Pride

Sunday was the NYC Pride Parade and Manhattan became a magical rainbow-filled land of happiness (unless you were trying to cross 5th Avenue anywhere in the city- best of luck with that). In addition to what I wore, I thought I'd share some snapshots from the day:
Above: a very excited (and sweaty) flower-power child, the Dykes on Bikes motorcycle gang, and the world's greatest feather headdress.

Clockwise from top: the best Delta flight attendant you've never had, some excited-looking pleebs, the world's cutest boys and girls scouts promoting equality for the Boy Scouts of America, and ABS.
There were so many abs kids.

Also above- half the freaking cast of Orange Is The New Black, which makes sense since Laverne Cox was the grand marshal of the parade this year. But that doesn't explain why Poussey was real excitedly pointing at us... no big deal.

TANK: J. CREW + SHORTS: AMERICAN APPAREL + BAG: DOUNEY&BOURKE  VINTAGE THRIFT + SANDALS: AMERICAN EAGLE (old) + MUSTACHE NECKLACE: URBAN OUTFITTERS (sold out, SIMILAR)

NAIL POLISHES: ESSIE (Pastels) + URBAN OUTFITTERS (Bolds) + AMERICAN APPAREL (Neons)

For the parade, I decided to go with an all white ensemble to show off some rainbow accents! (Proof you don't need to own rainbow clothing to dress thematically). This outfit was easily put together by painting my nails in all my favorite shades (I mixed it up with pastels on one hand and brights on the other) and painting rainbow war paint using acrylic paint I already had in my bottomless craft drawer. Face painting tip: if you squirt little dabs of paint on the back of your hand, like I usually do when painting my face, try this tip- rub a bit of lip balm over the back of your hand before squirting your little paint blobs on it, then when you scoop the paint up with your brush, it will get mixed with the balm just a little bit and won't dry out as much or crack on your face. This also coats your hand so wiping the excess paint off is a breeze.

Neon in the Neighborhood

Back from a beautiful May wedding and feeling fine! (Look out for a What to Wear to Summer Weddings post coming soon) Time for another classic, jeans and a tshirt tooling-around-the-city outfit, spiced up by one of my new favorite accents- neon yellow!

Neon yellow is great in surprising details on outfits- just make sure to keep the rest of the ensemble basic, so you don't come off radioactive.

Peachy Keen

NAIL POLISH: ESSIE in VANITY FAIREST

TOP: F21 (old) + SKIRT: Ann Taylor + SHOES: Vince Camuto (Similar)  +
NECKLACE & EARRINGS: C Wonder (old) + BRACELETS: J CREW (Available in store) & C WONDER +  LARGE RING: C WONDER + SQUARE RING: Madewell (part of set)

Almost all the jewelry in this post is, yet again, from C Wonder. My absolute favorite place to get deals on gorgeous jewelry. They always have great pieces in their sale section and all of their sale items go an additional 50% off about once a month!

And this skirt was a great find at Ann Taylor recently- they've had some cute lace and eyelet pieces lately too, and 40-50% off everything sales? You can't beat that.

This post could also have been called what to do with crop tops still floating around in your closet (here's to you, late-2000's-fashion).

What? you may say, I hardly noticed she was wearing a crop top. She looks so classy!

Well, first of all thank you, and second of all here is my trick for still wearing this black basic from the depths of my teenage wardrobe: statement necklaces and high-waisted skirts. This tight-fitting, couldn't-be-simpler-because-it's-literally-just-a-cylinder-of-fabric top blends right in and is perfect to showcase your chunkier necklaces and colorful skirts. I love pairing it with both pencil skirts and full skirts that cinch at my waist. It gives a nice hour glass shape rather than having to tuck in too much fabric, just make sure to go for a knee-length skirt over a mini skirt: it will keep the look classy and not hoochie mama
(for lack of a much better term).
