Weekend Casual

SWEATER: H&M (SIMILAR SAVE & SIMILAR SPLURGE) // JEANS: J. CREW //
NECKLACE: DIY (SIMILAR) // BOOTIES: DV BY DOLCE VITA (also available in size 6 HERE) //
EAR CUFF: REBECCA MINKOFF (SIMILAR) // BACKPACK: THRIFTED (BEACON'S CLOSET) //
SPIKE BRACELETS: BENEVOLENT JEWELS & C. WONDER (also love THIS)

Being an always-slightly-chilled lady myself, this outfit combo is pretty much my go-to in any season. My comfy skinny jeans, oversized lightweight sweater, ankle boots and some bling.

My latest addition this year has been this awesome thrifted leather backpack. I've been carrying it a lot on the weekends when I'm heading to the park or the farmers market, or shooting for the blog: any time I'll be carrying a lot of stuff. It's unbelievable the different between carrying weight in a purse on one shoulder vs. splitting it between two with a backpack. It makes me feel 10 lbs. lighter!

 TOP: C WONDER + DENIM: GAP 1969 + SHOES: VINCE CAMUTO +
EARRINGS: BENEVOLENT JEWELS + PURSE: VINTAGE THRIFT + NAILS: ESSIE "TART DECO"

Inaugural white pants post! Now that summer is in full swing in the city, I went on a major hunt for a new pair of (affordable) and stylish white skinny jeans. Joe Fresh, Levi and Gap were my biggest contenders but these super skinny "skimmer" jeans from Gap were the winner. (FYI they're on a bigger sale on the website than the store- but if you pull it up on your phone and show them in-store, they'll honor the price...) I especially love the tapered ankle length that looked great when I give them a small roll just once or twice (I hate big cuffs but love tiny ones! OCD? Maybe.)

I suppose this is also a sale-filled post because I got these beautiful VC Signature heels, normally $300, for THIRTY DOLLARS. I was walking from the upper east side over to central park the other weekend when I happened to stumble into a huge Vince Camuto street sale outside one of their stores. THIRTY DOLLARS. Crazy. So go walk around fashionable parts of town this summer kids, you never know what you might find.

And finally this blouse. I love me some cobalt blue, and some C Wonder (70% final sale right now on their website btw go go go!) but as I stood in the 90 degree heat for this shoot I realized I have a problem. And that problem is called "all-my-shirts-are-long-sleeved-and-I-might-melt-this-summer." So maybe buy the summery version of this blouse at Ann Taylor HERE. And check back soon to see what sleeveless tops I score this summer!

Shower Season

Ah, tis the season of showers (yes, rain... but we're talking bridal showers today)
The summer wedding season is almost upon us, so if your nearest and dearest are getting hitched this year you're probably starting to make the bridal shower rounds. I went back to the great state of MD this weekend to attend one myself, and thought I'd share some of my bridal shower fashion do's with all of you:

Attractive "windblown" shot

\

A bridal shower is all about celebrating your lady friend, so this isn't the time to wear that edgy show-stopper you've been wanting to show off. It's her day. Since this is usually a chance for the girls to get together sans-significant others, pick something feminine! I chose an extra girly fit-and-flare dress in hot pink and added a few pale lilac accents with my jewelry and nails. This is what I would call the grown up version of pink + purple... it takes me back to simpler, barbie loving days.

BRACELET: J Crew (available in store) + LARGE RING: C Wonder + SMALL RING: Madewell (part of set) + EARRINGS: Benevolent Jewels "Frozen Blossom" + NAIL POLISH: Essie "Go Ginza"

Benevolent Jewels is also having a 30% off sale for Mother's Day with the code LOVEMOM,
so go go go before it's over!

DRESS: Topshop "Crepe Flippy Dress" (avail. in citrus color - sold out in pink)
also love this lilac dress + SHOES: Michael Kors "Damita" Wedges +
PURSE: Michael Kors "Selma" Bag

I'll try not to harp on about how much I love these uber comfortable wedges in yet another post, but let's just say I was REAL glad I wore them when I was easily carrying my serving platters up the hill to the house and looked behind me to see another guest ever so painfully hiking it up the 45 degree hill (not an exaggeration) carrying 5 large gift boxes (also not an exaggeration- why so many gifts girl?) while wearing 4 inch pumps. She, naturally, went barefoot for the rest of the party.

Last tip: every once in a while, kick off those shoes and play in the grass! It's FINALLY spring kiddies.

Breezy Blue

This dress is a last season purchase for me, but it's long sleeves and light, sheer material mean it's been an effortless transition from a cold-weather-to-springtime-wear dress. While the dress is billowy and not fitted, it still shows some skin with it's deep v front and sheer upper back and sleeves. And something new I learned after this shoot? When the breeze picks up it looks like it's a romper, which I love! ...And I paired it with a dressier version of my favorite spring shoes - wedges all the way baby.

TOPSHOP DRESS (Last Season; Similar HERE and HERE) + VINCE CAMUTO VARRO WEDGES (Sold Out; Similar HERE, also love THESE for the bow and THESE for the shape) + J Crew Pearl Necklace + Benevolent Jewels Spike Bracelet c/o + RINGS: C Wonder & Forever21

Nail Tip: Nude + Sparkle

Not only are nude nails uber-chic, but they help bring balance to a bright glittery accent nail. I love large glitter nail polish, but it is SUCH a pain to try to remove that I generally try to limit myself to one accent nail per hand, unless I'm feeling extremely zealous.

Pictured above is Urban Outfitters Nail Polish in "LEATHER" and "MIDNIGHT KISS"

Hitting the town

Man are there days when I miss going out in the south. You throw on a tiny dress and sky high heels and you're good to go. Not so in NYC (at least for me). If I dressed for a night out in the city how I did in Carolina, I would (a) freeze to death 99% of the year and (b) never be able to walk far enough/fast enough to ever reach my destination.

Below is one of my favorite night-out-getups along with some tips
for hitting the town when you're actually in the city.

Jackets! (Holler). It gets darn chilly at night, and now that I'm a supposedly reasonable adult, freezing my butt off is less appealing than it used to be. Here's what I look for in a spring jacket:

1. Not too fancy. As much as I love beautiful high end jackets, I would rather spend the big bucks on my shoes or the outfit that I won't be taking off as soon as I get to the bar. Also most places you go out, you'll end up stuffing it under the bar or in a corner somewhere out of the way and I cringe thinking of doing that to a really expensive jacket.

2. Something lightweight. See reason #1 re: rolling up and stuffing your jacket out of the way.
(Or putting in your giant handbag if you carry one...)

CUSP BLOUSE + Hudson Black Jeans + MK Berkley Clutch +
C Wonder Spike Cuff in 'Camo Calf Hair' + RINGS: Forever 21 & Aldo

I like this monochromatic outfit a lot because it gives the impression of a jumpsuit, without actually having to buy a jumpsuit. Also pants = infinitely better for going dancing than a dress.

And now to my favorite part of this outfit: the bling.
It doesn't matter whether you're in New York or Texas right now, spikes are IN, and I'm loving it.

Seen here is my new Gold Spike Charm Bracelet from Benevolent Jewels. I've been lusting after a few all-gold spike bracelets for a while, and this kiddies, is what you would call "the one". I have a teeny tiny wrist, so I love that this bracelet stretches, rather than most non-stretch bangles, which are so big they slide right off my hand! The spikes are also a nice small size, and are intermixed with a few pave crystals (another trend I love), so it doesn't overwhelm my small wrist and is a nice feminine counterpart to my camo cuff.
You'll be seeing a lot more of this bracelet.

As for the Camo Spike Cuff, we all know I have a love affair with C Wonder. I'm not big on camo, but I do love me some calf hair and this one is so dark that the camo design isn't over powering. C Wonder always has amazing jewelry on sale, and much of the time everything in their sale section is an additional 50% off, like, oh wait, RIGHT NOW. You can get this bracelet for $17.50.

But check out THIS $12 STEAL from Nordstrom!

Last Tip: WEDGES.

My feet KILL me after a few hours of wearing heels, plus they make it hard to keep up with my boyfriend's surprisingly long strides once I've reached that "my feet feel like they're falling off" point in the night. Wedges are great because they still give me the dressed-up, leg-lengthening look that makes me love heels so much, but with so much less of the pain. These MK Damita Wedges are especially great because of the thick fabric strips and front zipper - my foot feels totally supported.

Another thing to think about in the city: if you can't afford a driver to take you everywhere, you probably can't afford to ruin your Jimmy Choo's by trudging through the hot mess that is the New York Subway System and general sidewalk areas. It's dirty out there yo. And there are so many bits of gravel all over the streets and sidewalks (why? I will never understand why??) that always scratch up the toe and heel of my nice stilettos. The natural woven look of these wedges (same goes for many with wood bottoms) isn't as delicate as most of my heels and does a good job of hiding any smudges that might occur.

Ashley
