Ode To The Earmuff

Giving a big sigh today while reading all these fashion blog posts showing open-toed heels and floral blouses proclaiming "Spring is Almost Here!" For those of you living in the frozen tundra that is the northeast, you know that spring is most certainly not here. Spring is still on vacation in Fiji and isn't even thinking about coming home yet. The low today in NYC is 3 degrees. 3 DEGREES. PLUS WIND.
(Shivers at her desk under her two layers of scarves...).

So stay bundled is the message of this post. And how to do that fashionably you may ask? Well I think a wool beanie is a cute as the next blogger, but my long, frizz-prone hair + a wool straightjacket pressing it to my head, does not for a good hair day make. Enter the earmuff (music of angels singing here). Keeps you warm where it counts, and won't mess up any 'do. Plus now that we're "supposedly" entering spring soon, there are some good sales to be found on winter wear. I'm wearing my favorite Athro earmuffs, I love how the cream color stands out against my hair, but a pair of black or oxblood ones would look so sleek! Check out some of my favorite fuzzy options below!

In clothing cute fashion NYC OOTD outfit of the day rainy day snow snow day south by soho SOUTHbySOHO style blog what I wore white

snow day

CARDIGAN: OLD NAVY (SIMILAR) + LEGGINGS: VICTORIA SECRET + SCARF: NORDSTROM RACK (SIMILAR) + EARMUFFS: ANTHROPOLOGIE + BOOTS: HUNTER

So we all survived the snowpacalypse here in NYC, but it seems like the snow flurries and piles of white fluff  (oops I meant kind-of-dirty-gray-mush) are here to stay for a while. Enter city-girl’s two best snow-weather friends:

(1) A pair of classic TALL rain boots. These have replaced my standard black leather boots for the time being. Going with black rather than a bright color means my coworkers don’t seem to notice that I wear them every day, and man is it nice not to worry about jumping over slush puddles and getting salt all over my leather boots on my way to and from the office. TIP: BUY THE BOOTSOCKS. They are essentially questionably-pricey fleece kneesocks, but honestly, they’re worth every penny to keep your feet toasty warm. Classic boots like Hunters have no real lining without them. Fold them over your boot (pictured) for one look, or tuck them down into the boot for a sleeker look while still staying warm.

(2) Blanket Scarves. Warm and chunky layers, you can’t beat it. And if you haven’t yet succumbed to buying the Zara plaid blanket scarf almost every woman has this season, it’s time. Nothing beats being able to wrap your scarf around you and snuggle up when the wind picks up.

Stay warm!

In blue c wonder clothing fall styles fashion NYC OOTD outfit of the day shopping south by soho SOUTHbySOHO style blog Tory Burch what I wore white

Pastel & Sparkly

TOP: TORY BURCH (last season) + DENIM: GAP 1969 + HEELS: NORDSTROM + EARRINGS: BLOOMINGDALE'S + BRACELET: C WONDER (SIMILAR) + CLUTCH: ZARA (SIMILAR) + NAILS: ESSIE "

Ok, I'm about to divulge a huge shopping secret of mine. Designer consignment. Is. My. Best. Friend. If you live in the NYC/Bklyn area, you must try out Beacon's Closet. It's a vintage + modern consignment shop, but if you're imagining your local salvation army, you are very far off the mark. The great thing about places like Beacon's is they are super picky about what they carry (read: great for shopping, not great for selling... What do you mean you won't take my $300 J. Crew dress just because it's more than 2 years old? Fools.) In order for them to carry a piece in the store, it has to be (a) vintage or (b) a top name brand from within the past 3 (I think) seasons, plus whatever other arbitrary rules they have that basically boil down to whether they like it or not.

The key to places like Beacon's is to go a lot. Luckily unluckily for me, there is one literally one block from my house (shopaholics everywhere are gasping in pleasure/pain at this thought). It can be totally hit or miss, but since their inventory turns over constantly, you'll probably never see the same things twice. Like this Tory Burch tunic, I have scored MAJOR deals there (especially on shoes and dresses) - and it allows me to buy more funky, adventurous designer pieces that I wouldn't normally be willing to spend so much on. Would I pay $300 for a designer blouse covered in so many hand-stitched sequins that it's practically unwashable? No. Would I pay $30 for it? You betcha.

So do some googling and ask around to find the top consignment shops in your area. (If you happen to live in the DC area, Mustard Seed in Bethesda is another fave, and was my regular haunt in high school and college.)

DIY: Easy Room Pick-Me-Up

Ok, this one's not the most exciting DIY project in the universe, but it is SO easy and it makes your room look much more put together. Like, a "why yes the curated gallery wall complements the drapes so nicely" bedroom vs. a "yeah most of this is my furniture that survived my college dorm" bedroom.

I myself recently moved into a new bedroom in my crazy brownstone of a house. So naturally, I immediately painted it pink and started buying furniture on craigslist to refinish. But while I had all my electrical outlets removed for the wall-painting-extravaganza anyway, it felt like the perfect time to spruce them up.

EXHIBIT A:
Dingy plastic outlet cover in weird off white/tan color. Paint crusted outlets.

Random assortment of white and tan outlets around the room.
If your landlord is as old and crochety as mine is, you probably also have this issue. Or if you're not OCD about decorating, maybe you just don't consider this an issue. To each their own.

WHAT YOU NEED
Screwdriver
Glossy white spray paint
(go for the 2-in-1 paint and primer, you'll never regret it and never have to prime again!)
Newspaper
Paper Plate

WHAT YOU DO
Use the screwdriver to unscrew all your outlet covers and light switch covers from the wall. Wipe them down to remove any dirt or dust, otherwise your paint won't stick as well. Lay some newspaper down outside (or in a well-ventilated area, duh) and place your outlets face up on top of it. Spray a thin coat of white paint over the top, being sure to get the edges as well, and let sit for 30 mins. Spray a second coat and wait for an hour to dry completely (or however long is recommended on the spray paint bottle).

To paint the screws from the outlet covers, especially important if yours were a weird dirty tan color like mine, or just to make sure they match the color you've now painted your outlet covers, punch them partway through the back of a paper plate and lay that down on your newpaper before spraying with the two-coat method. This will keep them upright and prevent them from rolling away never to be found again.

Take the opportunity to wipe down your uncovered outlets. They're probably pretty grimy and you probably won't ever bother to do this otherwise. Then screw your outlet covers back on once dried and voila!
Easy peasy update.

If you're looking for a flashier update to your outlets covers, paint them a funky neon color, modge podge some decorative paper or fabric onto them or cover them with washi tape designs. Check out other cool ideas on Pinterest HERE. I might pick one cool idea to jazz up my light switch cover...

I've got a big DIY weekend ahead so lookout for more fun (and more colorful and exciting, I promise) posts to come soon!

Striped Shorts

Ah yes, striped shorts on Spring Street in Soho in the Summertime.
Just doing my alliterative part in my favorite part of town.

TOP: EXPRESS + SHORTS: ASOS + HEELS: KELSI DAGGER + EARRINGS: NORDSTROM (SIMILAR) +
WATCH: MICHAEL KORS + BANGLES: ALEX & ANI

NAIL POLISH: URBAN OUTFITTERS "BLUE VELVET" (FINGERS) +

This is another one of those great day-to-night summer outfits. Shorts and a tank are pretty self-explanatory daytime-wear, but you can up the style factor of your outfit by picking a blouse in a silkier fabric than cotton and pair with structured, high-waisted shorts. Then you can slip on your heels and be ready for a night out!
. . .
Express is one of those stores I hadn't been to in a while, but it's actually done great things for me this summer. When I realized that I basically only own long sleeved tops, I hit up a major sale at Express and was able to get a whole bunch of sleeveless blouses that were nice enough for work and play and were super affordable!

Black and white and re(a)d all over

Like a newspaper!.. Get it?

Ok, my timeless grandpa-esque humor aside, I love the simplicity of this look. Living in NYC, most of my wardrobe has magically seemed to turn black and white, and the simple addition of one accent color (I picked red today, if you couldn't tell) in the form of lipstick, nail polish and a scarf, added the vavavoom I wanted to meet up with friends for drinks downtown after bopping around doing my usual weekend activities.

Sidenote: Cowgirl Seahorse at South Street Seaport has THE BEST frozen margaritas in the city. If you are in Manhattan go there now. This is important. I wanted to write this all in caps but feared it would come on too strong. That's how important.

RING: MATT BERNSON + SILK SCARF: LONGCHAMP (THRIFTED) + NAIL POLISH: MK 'SENSATION'

There are SO many ways to tie a headscarf, but this simple twist look is my personal fave, probably because it reminds me of my favorite Anthropologie headband! (Click HERE to see that baby in action)

HOW TO TIE A SILK SCARF HEADBAND:

1. Fold square scarf in half into a triangle. Fold in the point of the triangle 3 inches or so, then keep folding another 3 inches over itself, and on and on until the scarf is a long thin(ish) strip.

2. Reach underneath your hair and place the center of the strip on the nape of your neck, with the messy side of the strip (where you can see the folds) laying against your head. Then bring the two ends upward, framing your face.

3. Twist the two ends and pull them back down toward your neck, twisting only once so the ends each go back to the side they came from.

4. Tie a knot at the nape of your neck. Voila!
